(Saturday, July 27, Newslast7) – Due to rain and damp course conditions, the men's skateboard street event that was scheduled for Saturday, July 27, has been postponed. It has been rescheduled for Monday, July 29. The prelims and final of the women's skateboard street events are still set for Sunday, July 28, at 6 a.m. ET and 11 a.m. ET, respectively. These events may be watched live on NBCOlympics.com and Peacock.
There is a ton of elite skateboard talent from the United States, Japan, and Australia competing in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Skateboarding competitions kick up on July 27. Almost all of the Tokyo Olympics medalists are back, and new talent that has emerged in the last three years should make it a competitive environment.
Men's Street: The Legacy of Tokyo
With all three of the Tokyo medalists competing, the men's street event looks to be among the most competitive in Paris. Japan is a country that produces half of the world's top 10 male street skaters, demonstrating its dominance in the sport. Japan's three qualification slots were guaranteed by Ginwoo Onodera, Sora Shirai, and reigning Olympic gold medallist Yuto Horigome when they won the Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS) tournament in Budapest.
Horigome was favored in Tokyo and is still a contender in Paris, along with American talent Nyjah Huston. Huston won both of the street events at X Games Ventura, while Horigome won the OQS event in Budapest.
After finishing ninth in Tokyo, which was disappointing, Shirai is now looking for redemption. He won the Tokyo 2023 World Street Championships, which laid the groundwork for his triumph. At just 14 years old, Onodera is a rising star who finished second in this year's OQS competitions.
After winning the OQS in Shanghai, American Jagger Eaton—who took home the bronze in Tokyo despite suffering a broken ankle—is back on the mend and a serious podium contender. In men's skateboard street, Chris Joslin completes the American squad.
Men's Park: A Future American Superstar?
Team USA aims to sweep the podium in men’s park with top-ranked skaters Tate Carew, Gavin Bottger, and Tom Schaar. However, Australian Keegan Palmer, who won gold in Tokyo and at X Games Ventura, and Brazilian Pedro Barros, the Tokyo silver medalist, are formidable challengers.
Andy Macdonald, 51, competing for Great Britain, brings decades of experience to the competition. “Qualifying for the Olympics was like winning a medal for me,” Macdonald said. “All the stars had to align.”
Women’s Street: Japan's Stronghold
Japan's talent extends to women’s street with Coco Yoshizawa, Liz Akama, and Tokyo bronze medalist Funa Nakayama. All three qualified for Paris and have podium finishes at recent major World Skate events.
Australian Chloe Covell and Brazilian silver medallist Rayssa Leal are also in the running. Covell earned gold at the X Games last year, while Leal won the OQS event in Shanghai.
In the women's street competition, Paige Heyn, Poe Pinson, and Mariah Duran compete on behalf of Team USA.
Women's Park: Emerging Artistry Strikes
The 15-year-old Cocona Hiraki, who won the 2023 World Park Championships in Rome, hopes to improve on her silver medal from Tokyo. 14-year-old Australian Arisa Trew is competing in her first Olympics after winning the X Games park event and OQS competitions this year.
Tokyo bronze medalist Sky Brown returns for Great Britain, having recovered from an MCL tear. Americans Bryce Wettstein, Ruby Lilley, and Minna Stess bring their skills to the Paris course. “We’re all hyping each other up to do things. That’s what skating is about,” Stess said.
