The man was seen climbing the famous building at around 14:45 local time (13:45 BST). Police moved in swiftly and took him into custody right away. Information on the man's nationality or motivation has not yet been made public by the authorities.
Social media users have been sharing videos of the shirtless man climbing the tower, directly above the Olympic rings that have been there for the entire summer games. Another video shows the man being led away by police with his hands cuffed behind his back. He is heard remarking, "Bloody warm, innit?" to a passerby.
The Associated Press reports that during the incident, French authorities evacuated the area surrounding the Eiffel Tower. Citing police sources, CNN also reported on the evacuation of the tower. But as of 16:00, Newslast7 has not independently confirmed if the evacuations were still in effect.
It was unexpected that the highlight of the Olympic opening ceremony, the Eiffel Tower, would also serve as the site of the closing ceremony later that evening.
