Tom Cruise Descends from Stadium Roof in Daring Olympic Finale

At the Paris 2024 closing ceremony on Sunday night, Hollywood actor Tom Cruise made a spectacular cameo by swinging down from the roof of the Stade de France on a wire. The Mission: Impossible star, decked up in a leather jacket and gloves, lowered himself into the stadium to the pleasure of the screaming fans as his fellow countryman H.E.R. gave a guitar performance.

As part of the transition to Los Angeles, the host city of the 2028 Olympics, Cruise appeared in a pre-recorded video passing through Paris and entering the US. He traveled to the fabled Hollywood sign there and unfurled the Olympic colors. The ceremonial "au revoir" from this year's host city was signified by the ceremony in Paris.

Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, said the Paris Games had been "sensational." In his closing speech, he praised athletes for their "simply amazing" performances, saying they showed "what greatness we humans are capable of."

"You all lived together in harmony in the Olympic Village under one roof for the entire duration," he went on. You gave each other a hug. Even if there is war and strife between your countries, you still have respect for one another. You established a culture of harmony. We are all inspired by this, as are billions of others worldwide. We appreciate you letting us dream. We are appreciative of your belief in a better society for all people."

Before giving a shaky performance of the US national song, musician H.E.R. played on an electric guitar during Cruise's performance during the closing ceremony. Then, he accepted the Olympic flag from American gymnast Simone Biles, one of the bright lights of Paris, and the ecstatic crowd watched him ride off on a motorcycle.

The pre-recorded clip showing his journey to LA was soundtracked by California natives Red Hot Chili Peppers. The funk-rock hitmakers then delivered a live performance of their classic track "Can't Stop" on a palm-fringed beach in Los Angeles. Other acts included Billie Eilish and Snoop Dogg, who performed with Dr. Dre.

Being a native of Los Angeles, Snoop was a mainstay at the Games, which culminated with the US winning the gold medal in the women's basketball final on Sunday. Famous for pulling off his own stunts, Cruise is also well-known from the movie Top Gun. These have included hanging outside an aircraft during takeoff and scaling Dubai's Burj Khalifa, both for the Mission: Impossible television series, during the past ten or so years.

Cruise's achievement was enhanced by another scene with a cinematic atmosphere, thanks to artistic director Thomas Jolly. A group of dancers assembled the Olympic emblem by rolling five enormous rings around a stage as the stadium fell silent and black. The dark sci-fi image was ultimately broken up by an energetic performance by Phoenix, a French band who ripped through two singles. The stadium announcer was furious as athletes swarmed them and climbed up on stage.

Maybe the worst-kept secret in Paris was Cruise's role. Even before he was pictured in the stadium on Sunday night, there had been rumors in the media for several days. During the Games fortnight in Paris, the 62-year-old was observed multiple times, supporting the US team in the swimming relay and seeing American gymnast Simone Biles, who has won multiple medals.

He said, "It's awesome," to Newslast7 at the moment. "Excellent athletes, wonderful story. What they accomplish is amazing."
The Olympics' spectacular curtain-raiser last month, which included a boat parade along the Seine River and a return performance by singer Céline Dion, was also masterminded by artistic director Jolly.
