Olympic Breaking Kicks Off with Historic Win by B-Girl India

Breaking, or breakdancing, officially debuted at the Paris Games on Friday, marking a momentous event for the Olympic Games. B-Girl India, a Dutch competitor, qualified for the Olympics by defeating B-Girl Talash, a member of the refugee squad, in the first-ever Olympic breaking fight.

A unusual pre-qualifying showdown between Manizha Talash, also known as "B-Girl Talash," and India Sardjoe, also known as "B-Girl India," set the setting for the women's breaking tournament. There were no pre-qualifiers before this match. Instead, players competed in a round-robin format to earn a position in the quarterfinals.

The pre-qualifier was introduced in May after Talash was added to the Olympic roster. Originally from Afghanistan, Talash missed registration for qualifying events, but the International Olympic Committee extended an invitation after learning of her courageous efforts to challenge the Taliban's strict rules in her homeland.

The actual combat was a demonstration of divergent tactics. Sardjoe opened off with a barrage of power attacks, but Talash countered by concentrating on toprocking before launching into deft footwork. Talash made a strong statement by revealing a cloak that with the slogan “Free Afghan Women,” emphasizing her message of resistance.

B-Girl India's victory moved them into the round-robin stage, when teams of four breakers would compete against each other in a series of matches. There will be just two competitors from each group that move on to the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final, which will determine the identity of the first Olympic breaking champion.

The event was electrified by the presence of American rapper Snoop Dogg, who made a grand entrance to his hit song "Drop it Like it’s Hot." His appearance sparked cheers and dancing among the spectators. The 17 b-girls competing on Friday were introduced with fanfare, with participants from France and the U.S. receiving the loudest applause.

Experienced b-boys and b-girls from all around the world judged the competition. They set up shop between a massive boombox replica, which paid homage to the musical roots of breaking, and a circular dance floor that was fashioned after a vinyl record. At the core of this dynamic and expressive dancing form is still the breakbeat, which is the essential point in a song when the DJ loops the beat and the vocals drop.
