Hamas Political Chief Ismail Haniyeh Killed in Iran

In a major development that has thrown the region into an unpredictable and dangerous new phase, Hamas announced that its political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an Israeli strike in the Iranian capital of Tehran.

Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement in Haniyeh’s assassination. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in remarks on Wednesday, stated that Israel is “ready for any scenario” and emphasized, “I am not giving in.”

Haniyeh’s death marks the second assassination of a prominent figure from an Iran-backed group within a day, following the killing of a senior Hezbollah commander in Lebanon by Israel.

With a statement that addressed Israel, "You killed our dear guest in our house and now have paved the way for your harsh punishment," Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, promised to exact revenge for Haniyeh's passing.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken responded by saying that his country was "not aware of or involved in" Haniyeh's murder.
